Popular Gambian online portal Whatsongambia reported that Dawda Jawara “has been stabbed to death in Libya following an altercation with a Libyan man”. Another Gambian, Karamo Janneh alias Pa-Boy, died a “sudden death”.
Commenting on the development, a friend of the deceased, Kebba Ansu Manneh said: “I am wishing all my good friends and relatives on their voyage to Italy a very safe one. I have no doubt in my mind and equally certain that if everything is rosy in our beautiful Smiling Coast they would not have taken all the troubles to leave home. I am praying for the departed ones who lost their lives in the struggle to make it to Italy as we mourn the sudden demise of Karamo.”
A Gambian resident in Tripoli, Musa Ceesay, told The Standard that the situation in Libya has “worsened substantially” putting them at risk.
“There has been serious fighting here between different armed factions. We are used to occasional skirmishes between the different militia but not on the scale it is now. We are here to find work or move on to Italy but the war here has made everything a trifle more difficult”.
