The new football season will start next week with an expanded number of clubs in both the first and second division leagues.

This year, 16 clubs will compete in the first division as opposed to the previous 12.

This followed the promotion of Samger, Steve-Biko, Falcons and Rhino. Equally, the second division has now been expanded to 18 teams following the promotion of Medina FC, Greater Tomorrow, Dibba Oil, Wagadu and Kanifing Estate.

According to the director of competitions at the GFF Baboucar Jobe, speaking to GFF media, all logistics have been put in place for the league though with limited grounds. Because of on-going renovation works at most grounds, the men’s first division league matches would be played at night in the first three weeks. “It is hoped that later, with the grounds in Banjul and Brikama expecting to be done soon, there will be more fields,” he said. He warned that the schedules will be tight at the beginning but there would be more grounds by December.

Mr Jobe said the regional football associations too have been put on alert to stage their leagues within the stipulated time frame, November to June. The national football title is currently being held by Fortune FC of Farato.
