A delegation of senior government officials including Gambia Revenue Authority commissioner general Yankuba Darboe last week visited Senegal to engage officials of the Direction Generale des Douanes of Senegal on the need to ease travel and trade between two countries.
The delegation which returned from Dakar on Friday included the Gambian ministers of finance and justice and senior GRA officers.
The visit provided a forum for officials of the two countries to discuss means to eliminate double taxation for cross-border travellers and goods. According to the GRA officers who were in Dakar, the first round of negotiations ended successfully as the two authorities agreed on the articles of the agreement.
“The second round of negotiations will be hosted by The Gambia to further review and agree on the text in both English and French after which the ministers of finance of the two countries will sign the agreement. It will then be taken to the National Assembly for ratification,” a GRA officer told The Standard.
