Inmate in court for attempting to cut prison officer’s neck with razor blade

Prosecutors alleged that 39-year-old Ebrima Sanyang, who is already standing a murder trial at the Banjul High Court, attempted to cut the neck of a prison officer, Mamadou Jabbie, with a razor blade.

The incident happened in February at the maximum security wing of the central prison, the court heard.

 “I understand the charge very well but I am not guilty as charged,” Mr Sanyang said. 

The presiding magistrate, Dawda Jallow, then referred the case to the office of the Chief Justice for reassignment, as lower courts have no jurisdiction to preside over cases of capital offence.
