Omar Ceesay, the opposition Gambia Democratic Party NAM for Niamina East has donated his 2 months’ salary to support the fight against Covid-19 in his constituency.
The money was used to purchase medical equipment and to cover all hospital bills for any patients in Niamina East for two months.
The lawmaker said the donation was in fulfilment of a promise he made to the people of his constituency.

“I hope the support will help my people contain the spread of the virus and as well ease the pressure of having to spend money to purchase medical items. I believe as a country we must do everything we can in our capacity to assist government in its fight to contain the spread of Covid-19,” he said.

Ceesay said the support is not in any way meant to score political points, “The moment I was elected to office I ceased to be representing an individual party. I am in the parliament for the people of Niamina East and The Gambia at large.”

“I just thought I should share the little thing I have with my people in this crucial time of our country’s history. It is also important to note that part of the money donated will be used to cover the medical bills for two months,” he added.

He said he chose to direct his support to the health centre because he thought that was the best thing to do to keep people safe and well.
The officer-in-charge of Kudang health centre, Limam Hydara said Omar Ceesay has been very supportive to the health centre.

“He has also donated sanitary materials and handwashing kits for the hospital and every village in Niamina East and built a RCH ground for Njie Kunda and its surrounding villages living eight kilometres away from the main health centre in Kudang,” he said.
The GDC national chairman, Dr Demba Sabally urged other parliamentarians to emulate the youngest lawmaker in the country.

“Having said that I want call on all Gambians to follow the precautionary measures given by the WHO and the Ministry of Health. I urge all those who can help to support the vulnerable,” he said.
