One Sergeant Faal, an officer of the Police Intervention Unit, died in a car crash on Friday, between the hours of 10:30hrs and 11:00hrs on the Soma Highway.
Faal was the driver of the said vehicle at the time of the accident.
According to official police sources, the vehicle registration number GPF 9 MKK, driven by Sergeant Faal was carrying PIU personnel based in Mansa-Konko on their way to Kaiaf when the accident happened between Sara-Samba and Kaiaf Village in the LRR.
The police said the men were going on an official duty at a checkpoint in Kaiaf, so as to relieve those on duty. “Immediately after Sara-Samba entering Kaiaf at a sharp bend, the rear tyre of the Pick-Up burst and the driver lost control of the vehicle. Suddenly the vehicle swayed from the high way and summersaulted causing serious injuries to all those onboard, which include 10 PIU officers, 1 military and Immigration officers,” a police statement said yesterday
The victims were escorted to Soma Major Health Center where Sergeant Faal (the driver) was pronounced dead while the rest were referred to Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital for further medical treatment.
