Her Majesty The Queen has thanked people across the world as celebrations marking her seventy years on the throne ended over the weekend.
The British High Commission in The Gambia had hosted a reception last week to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, attended by government officials and the diplomatic community.
Addressing the gathering, David Belgrove OBE had said: “During her reign which started thirteen years before Gambia’s first Republic. There have now been three Republics and also 20 British High Commissioners and Ambassadors…..and a couple of million British tourists.
I should like to take this opportunity to celebrate our enduring friendship with The Gambia, from the many British tourists who arrive on these shores every year to a warm welcome and experience Gambian culture and diverse wildlife – to our cooperation on the international stage and our bilateral programmes.”
In a statement from Buckingham Palace yesterday, 96-year-old Queen Elizabeth II expressed: “When it comes to how to mark seventy years as your Queen, there is no guidebook to follow. It really is a first. I have been humbled and deeply touched that so many people have taken to the streets to celebrate my Platinum Jubilee.
While I may not have attended every event in person, my heart has been with you all; and I remain committed to serving you to the best of my ability, supported by my family.
I have been inspired by the kindness, joy and kinship that has been so evident in recent days, and I hope this renewed sense of togetherness will be felt for so many years to come.
I thank you most sincerely for your good wishes and for the part you have all played in these happy celebrations.”
