The Gambia government has drawn up a concept note for the establishment of a national coordinating committee (NCC) which will be tasked to execute programmes and various activities towards preparing The Gambia’s participation in the African Nations cup finals in Cameroun.
The tournament starts in January with The Gambia appearing for the first time.
According to Marcel Mendy, executive director of the National Sports Council NSC, the national coordinating committee will comprise smaller sub- committees each with specific roles. The committee would be headed by the permanent secretary (technical) at the ministry of sports and would include officials of the Gambia Football Federation GFF, the media, the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and other stakeholders with authority or influence in all fields relevant to the process. ”Of course, one of the key activities is fund raising and this will require a huge investment from both government and possible partners,” he said.
Mr Mendy said consultations are on-going for the grand launching of the committee in the very near future.
The Gambia would take part in the 24 – nation event as new comers. With just six months to go, Gambians eagerly want preparations to start now and have tasked government to take up the Afcon project as a very important development.
