Stefan Samba, 23, is already ranked among the top ten judo players in Holland and among the best 50 in Europe. The young man is currently visiting the land of his father for the first time and he told The Standard that his mission is to discover his second home and help the country advance in judo. “I was involved in judo since I was very young and have worked hard to reach this far. Now I have decided to play for The Gambia,” he proudly said. Asked if playing for The Gambia may not keep him away from his schooling in Holland, Samba said he obviously expects to be frequenting The Gambia and will have to balance time for Gambian judo and his schooling in Holland.
Samba who has been meeting sports ministry officials and Gambia National Olympic Committee officials said he found them to be very welcoming and friendly as has been everyone else in the country. He leaves town today delighted he has fulfilled a lifelong desire to connect with his father’s land.
