UTG earmarks D43M for research

Prof Pierre Gomez, the deputy vice-chancellor of academics at the University of The Gambia has disclosed that D43 million is allocated to support research this year alone.

Prof Gomez made these remarks yesterday at the official opening of the directorate of research and consultancy complex in Kanifing.

He stated that in addition to the structure and for the first time in the history of UTG, they disbursed D16 million to support the academic staff to conduct research last year which has been increased to D43 million.

Gomez continued to say that the UTG also conducted some trainings on research and more are in the pipeline for this month with different partners coming from other parts of the world to work with the university staff and students.

Dr. Muhammed Sanyang, director of research and consultancy, commended the new development and called on stakeholders to promote and support the UTG research.

Prof Faqir Muhammed Anjum, the vice-chancellor of UTG, said the importance of research for a university cannot be overemphasized. “It is through research that new discoveries are made as well as new technologies and ideas developed for the betterment of society. It is also through research that new curriculums are developed to ensure that the training that universities do respond to the needs of society, therefore, engaging in high impactful research is important for improving the global profile of the UTG,” the vice chancellor said.
