Woman charged with obtaining over D12M under false pretense

A 30-year-old woman has been charged by prosecutors in Banjul with obtaining over D12 million under false pretense.

Binta Dibba, from Kotu, faces nine charges of obtaining money by false pretenses as prosecutors said she received monies from British national Jonathan Bennett on many occasions.

According to the allegation on the first charge, Binta with intent to defraud, obtained 50, 000 British Pounds from Jonathan by falsely representing that the said money was meant to purchase a property in the Gambia for Jonathan which was far more than the value of the said property which was valued at 34,000 Pounds.

She is further accused of obtaining 43,374 Pounds from Jonathan by falsely representing that the said money was meant for legal fees for lawyer for conveyance of property and another 1,642 Pounds that she claimed was meant for a lawyer.

Prosecutors also accused Binta of receiving another 3,027 Pounds by falsely representing that the money was meant for the Gambia Revenue Authority tax on his new property while 8,292 Pounds was obtained on the pretext that it was meant for payment of council tax.
