The secretary general of the Gambia National Trade Union Congress Garba Cham yesterday addressed a May Day rally by calling on government to work fast on a possible upward revision of salaries to commensurate with the high cost of living.
Mr Cham further said the situation of pensioners too should be looked into so as to improve the pittance paid to them. He lamented the high costs of transport especially with drivers asking for two or three fares on the same journey, saying all these take money from the little salary of workers.
Mr Cham however thanked the Gambia government for the adjustment in transport allowances which he said though commendable, is not enough.
Responding, the minister of trade Dr Isatou Touray outlined many areas of improvement envisaged by government toward the betterment of workers.
