Two people have been confirmed dead in a serious accident involving two cars belonging to National Assembly members on the Banjul highway yesterday.
According to police spokesman ASP Foday Conta, the accident occurred at Kamalo and the initial investigations revealed that Hon Babagalleh Jallow of Sanementereng and Hon Saikouba Jarjue of Busumbala constituencies both escaped with minor injuries while scores of other passengers mainly on the back of the vehicles were also seriously injured.
The Standard also confirmed that one of the passengers is journalist Abdoulie John.
ASP Conta further disclosed that investigations so far revealed that the two cars crashed after one of them joined the fast lane crossing the path of the other. He said the matter is still being investigated.
Meanwhile one of the dead has been identified as Bubacarr Jawo, while the other victim was not immediately identified.
Dozens of people, believed to be friends and family members of the NAMs and other passengers, could be seen at the hospital.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Ousainou Darboe and the Speaker of the National Assembly Mariam Jack-Denton visited the hospital to show solidarity.
