The two newly-elected UDP ward councillors for Tallinding and Jeshwang were yesterday sworn in at a ceremony held at the Kanifing Municipal Council.
Musa Badjie of Tallinding and Junkunba Dukureh of Old Jeshwang replaced Sanusi Touray, Independent, and Sheriff Sarr of the APRC, who vacated their positions to run in the parliamentary election.
The ceremony, presided over by Mayor Yankuba Colley, was attended by other councillors and representative from the Ministry of Justice.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Colley called on both the old and newly-elected councillors to put their party affiliations aside and work towards serving the interest of the their various communities and the country at large.
He said though the councillors may have political differences, they are united by one common objective, “to serve our very people who sent us here to represent them.”
He said the general council of the Kanifing municipality are known for their unity, adding: “Yes we have our different, divergent views, but we disagree only to agree on issues that serve the best interest of our people. This general council constitutes of 17 elected councillors and 6 nominated members representing the business community, council of elders, youths, women, civil society and the alkalolu,” he explained.
The representative of the Ministry of Justice also exhorted the newly-elected councillors to put the interest of their people and The Gambia at heart and work in unison.
