The police have confirmed yesterday that the eight people arrested in Brikama Gidda on July 23 were not celebrating July 22 anniversary as widely reported on social media.
According to police spokesman Inspector Foday Conta the group was arrested and charged with common nuisance and have since been released. “Their arrests came after people in the surroundings reported and complained about loud music blaring from their musical instruments. They were arrested and investigations have found that they are not connected to any political activity or celebrations and were not wearing any APRC or July 22 promotional material,” Conta said.
The PRO said people might have misunderstood them because of the presence of the Baati Yai music troupe which used to regularly follow former president Jammeh’s campaign convoy.
