ActionAid International The Gambia has donated £10,000 (Ten thousand pounds) towards the fight against Ebola. The money was sent to ActionAid International on behalf of the Board of Directors, Staff and Management of ActionAid International The Gambia. The donation, which included personal commitments of Board members and staff, is in response to an appeal by the Chief Executive Officer of ActionAid International Adriano Campolina to all ActionAid offices for support and solidarity with our colleagues in countries affected by Ebola.

In making the donation the Executive Director Omar Badjie said his office is aware of the socio-economic and political consequences of Ebola within the sub-region. “We want to work in solidarity with the peoples of Sierra Leone and Liberia in the fight against Ebola to bring it under control”, he said. Badji prayed for the souls of those who have lost their lives and expressed sympathy with their families.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the response to the Ebola epidemic has now moved to a second phase, as the focus shifts from slowing transmission to ending the epidemic. To achieve this goal as quickly as possible, efforts have moved from rapidly building infrastructure to ensuring that contact tracing,  case management, safe burials, and community engagement efforts continue, to avoid complacency and future surges in Ebola cases.

ActionAid International The Gambia has been responding positively towards the fight against Ebola. The agency has strengthened the capacity of civil society organisations and the communities on the prevention and control of Ebola through The Association of Non-Governmental Organisations in The Gambia (TANGO). It has donated half a million dalasi equivalent to £8,000 to the Ministry of Health for the training of traditional healers, youth peer health educators and traditional birth attendants in Ebola prevention. It has also produced drama programmes in three local languages and printed posters on how to prevent and control Ebola.
