A sit-down strike by bakers in Kanifing has led to bread scarcity in the Greater Banjul Area yesterday.
According to sources, the strike is intended to force the government to accept bakers’ demand to maintain bread price at D7 per loaf.

Recently, the Ministry of Trade announced a 30 percent reduction in the price of the 50kg flour bag and advised bakers to ensure that the new tariff reflects on the price of bread in the streets.
The Ministry advised that bakeries or bread vendors should sell a dozen at D66 while shopkeepers should resell to consumers at D5.5 bututs, down from D7 a loaf.
However according to reports, the bakers have been holding meetings with the authorities in a bid to resolve the matter.
