In a rare comment, the deputy leader of the opposition Gambia Democratic Congress, Yusupha Jaiteh, has said if there is one thing they agree with President Barrow, that has to be his desire for term-limit to be included in the Gambian constitution.
Speaking to The Standard, Mr Jaiteh said Barrow’s insistence on the matter now gives a correct signal about his government’s sincerity over the matter.
“In our previous interview, I told you they were not interested in it, but we are really proud that the president has now taken the lead in making this a reality,” Mr Jaiteh said.
The GDC man said his party is happy with the President on this matter and would wish to commend him for a job well done.
Mr Jaiteh said a presidential term-limit will enhance peace and harmony in the country.
“Governments will now know they don’t have all the time to be here. Gambians will also have at the back of their minds that whether we love Mr X or not, 10 years is the maximum. So you either deliver or move on. This will take our country to another level of governance indeed,” Jaiteh said.
The GDC man said everybody should work to leave a legacy worth emulating, especially the president of the republic.
