Faraba Banta VDC disassociates itself from ‘Sunday demonstration’

Press release

It has come to the attention of the Village Development Committee of Faraba Banta that a group of people claiming to be in solidarity with the people of Faraba Banta are planning a demonstration on Sunday June 24th2018. While we appreciate everyone’s efforts and solidarity, we want to equally make it clear that this is not the time for demonstration.

As a community, we are still in mourning. We have already endured enough carnage. Some of our youths are still hospitalized in critical conditions while some families have lost virtually everything in the ensuing disturbances. Even though the organisers of the planned protest call it a peaceful exercise, it is our considered opinion and position that in a volatile situation like we are confronted with, there is a possibility that the demonstration can lead to un-intended consequences.

For this reason, the village Development Committee of Faraba Banta has taken a unanimous decision to disassociate itself from any public demonstration in our name.
Now that the government has set up a commission of inquiry into the matter and that news that the Inspector General of Police has resigned, we want to call on our fellow countrymen to allow the due process to take its natural course.

While we thank everyone for their immense show of solidarity, we also appeal restraint so that the situation does not turn into another national tragedy.

Signed
Alhagie Sanyang
Chairman, VDC
