Over D15.1M GRCS water project to improve livelihoods in various communities

The Gambia Red Cross Society’s 15,163,344 million dalasis water project was recently implemented in various communities to improve livelihoods of people living in Tangkong Kunda, Tuba Wuli, 5 gardens in  Kiang West and 2 gardens in Foni.

The project has the capacity to pump 60,000 Litres of water per day for the community which has 11 solar taps installed for them at strategic positions across the village.

In a similar development, at Touba Wuli, the community is also currently using 30,000-Litre water project implemented by GRCS.

The projects are funded by The Gambia Red Cross Society, SolHEALTH and UB-ONE in Tangkong Kunda and Touba Wuli while gardens in Kiang are being funded by EU and the Spanish Red Cross, Foni is being funded by IFRC and Japanese Red Cross.

Speaking to press, Alasan Senghore, secretary general the Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS) said he is very pleased that they are providing water to communities that were drinking open well water for a very long time.

“I am satisfied that we are able to provide water which is life to communities in The Gambia,” he said.

He noting that it is now up to beneficiaries to maintain the solar panels and system so that they can continue to enjoy the water.

He expressed delight that the contractors delivered the standard and quality required for the boreholes.

He also highlighted that Red Cross is beyond disasters, adding that they deal with peace, development and humanitarian.

SG Senghore further stated that they also complement government’s efforts in terms of agriculture, food security, access to clean water among other areas knowing that government cannot do it all alone.

Also Speaking, Aja Nyara Ceesay, a native of Tangkong Kunda expressed delight with the project, saying human beings cannot live without water.

She stated that they suffered water shortage before the coming of the project, noting that some days they would go to bed without water.

She thanked GRCS and partners for their service to humanity. According to her, they will all serve as securities for the protection and sustainability of the project.

The monitoring mission also helped the team discuss with branches on the strategies of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The main objective of the monitoring was to strengthen regional partnership with communities, enhance response coordination as well as identify gaps in the implementation of project activities.

The projects and operations are being implemented by Red Cross volunteers under the leadership of GRCS branch executives and branch officers while others are contracted.

All the operations are being coordinated and supervised at the national headquarters.
