A team of Gambian chefs have won three prestigious awards at the African Food Festival in Ghana.
The team scooped Best Chef, Best Dessert, and Second Best Food awards of the year 2019.
It was the first time The Gambia competed in the West African Food Festival, held in Accra, Ghana this year.
The festival brings different foods from all over Africa for an unrivaled, tasty food extravaganza in one location.
A team of four Gambian chefs, led by Chef Musa Darboe of Kololi Beach club, participated in the festival.
Other participants included Assan Demba, head chef, Ngala Lodge, Zainab Gomez, Labranda Hotel and Maimuna Sey of Jarra Kitchens.
The festival aims to project West Africa as a primary destination for food tourism, whilst highlighting the unity in diversity of West Africans.
The PRO of the Gambia Chef Association, Yaya Barry, said: “For us, we are very happy.
This is the first competition we participated in. We are not surprised [that we won awards] because we know the candidates we put out there. Catering is not new in The Gambia.
We normally don’t compete; we just go and participate and take our trophies and come back”
The country is now ranked second in the African food category, thanks to the exploits of these cooks.
