The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) and its partners will today launch a two-year partnership programme aimed at developing women’s football in the country. This will be done in the form of a press conference where the globally acclaimed football expert, Monika Staab, a German, will be formerly introduced to the Gambian people.
Ms. Staab, 59, a former German football player and football manager has returned to the country on a two-year technical assistance programme following the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Gambia’s Ministry of Youth & Sports and Germany’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The programme is mainly targeted at the overall development of women football in The Gambia. This was also secured through the joint efforts of The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) and the GFF.
During her two years stay in the country, the former Paris Saint-Germain, Queens Park Rangers and Southampton midfielder will be responsible for training women coaches and engage in the implementation of our women football programmes at the local schools. She will also be organising seminars for women league club officials with a view to reaching to the grassroots at the school level in order to enhance their development and competence level. She will further work with the female coaches and football technicians to jointly improve the competition system while at the same time helping to improve the ability of female referees.
The programme targets the age bracket of 9-12 years girls, which will be useful to The Gambia as it seeks to benefit the country in the next four years when the GFF and the country will yield the fruits of the project. It is meant to create a solid foundation for the country, increase awareness, and build strong teams at both league and national level that will transcend into producing formidable national teams at all categories.
This development, in partnership with the German government through the German Consulate in Banjul will further seek to improve the infrastructure sector of women’s football and provide technical logistics for a level playing field that will propel The Gambia into sound and standard practices of football administration and technical competencies.
The project launch will also be attended by officials of MoYS and the GNOC..
Scorpions winger Mo Barrow returned to the starting 11 for his championship side Reading FC for first time since early October. Barrow played 87 minutes and help his side to and emphatic 3-2 win over Bristol city on Saturday. The mesmerizing winger produced a decent performance and assisted Bacuna in the 66th minute to restore their lead in a well-fought game before being substituted 3 minutes from time.
