Poverty persists in The Gambia because of the mindset of the people, according to Halifa Sallah, and not down to lack of resources.
The leader of the opposition People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) was speaking at a workshop organised by Mbolo Association in Tujereng.
“We are dependent because of our mindset and not because we do not have resources.
We are retarding rather than developing because of our mindset. We are importing most of the rice we are consuming, which is about 70 percent,” the lawmaker said.
“We are small-scale producers. They said we have plans in terms of energy, but we are only producing two percent of renewable energy,” Halifa, who spoke at length on climate change and its effects, decried.
The programme was funded by the European Union.
