The National Assembly on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of Halimatou Dibba as a commissioner at the National Human Rights Commission.
Ms Dibba was shortlisted alongside Musu Bakoto Sawo to fill the vacant position of a commissioner at the NHRC.
The motion for confirmation was tabled by the justice minister last year and referred to the Assembly Public Appointments Committee for scrutiny and recommendation.
However, according to the chairperson of the committee, Majority Leader Kebba Barrow, the assembly received communication from the commission that one of the two female shortlisted candidates has travelled abroad for further studies with no intention of returning anytime soon.
This gave Ms Dibba a clear way to stand as the only candidate for selection.
The committee has the responsibility of advising the Assembly in confirming shortlisted persons for appointment as commissioners in accordance with the National Human Rights Acts.
