HAWKS CRASH AS ARMY STEPS IN

To many people’s disappointment Hawks FC went out of the Caf Confederations Cup and with them any hope of a possible revival of Gambia’s status in international football. Watched by a sizable crowd, Hawks who raised hopes by shocking the Nigerian Akwa United fell, prey to the avenging marauding players from Uyo surrendering every bit of their worth to a 2-0 defeat and it could have been worse had the Nigerians not squandered a penalty in addition to other deadly chances. Hawks’ reply was lukewarm and even when it seemed they could keep the good luck they picked in Uyo, they were never totally convincing on the night. Cyril Olisema’s brace was enough to do the job for the promised keepers from Nigeria who now moved to the next stage in the qualifiers.

Meanwhile The Gambia Armed Forces FC could wipe the tears of Gambian fans tomorrow as they take on Zanaco of Zambia in the CAF champions league. The Sensational Zanaco arrived here carrying a 3-0 aggregate score and are hoping to complete the job at the Independence Stadium tomorrow unless GAF can combine surprise and magic to score three goals and more and stop the Zambians from scoring. That possibility is remote but it’s all Gambians have as a dream in football these days. God help the Army and the nation.
