The Independent Electoral Commission has said it will not be conducting a by-election in the Kiang West constituency following the demise of its lawmaker. The Kiang West parliamentary seat became vacant following the demise of Member Fakebba Colley of the UDP on Saturday August 14.
Speaking to The Standard yesterday, the IEC director of communication Pa Makkan Khan, said there would be no by-election because, according to the constitution, there cannot be a National Assembly by-election less than nine months before the expiry of the current assembly –April 2022.
“In other words, there cannot be a by-election in Kiang West because the remaining tenure of this current parliament is not up to nine months in accordance with the Elections Act,” Khan said.
