A 21-year-old man was yesterday brought before a magistrate’s court in Brikama charged with the murder of Momodou Sowe at Brikama Joko Night Club.
Paul Mendy of Brikama Nyambai was slammed with a single charge of murder. He is accused of killing Momodou Sowe by stabbing him with a knife in his stomach. Mendy denied culpability, saying “we fought but he didn’t die on the spot”.
However, Superintendent Camara urged the court to transfer the case to the Special Criminal Division of the High Court in Banjul, arguing that the offence is a capital offence attracting a possible life sentence. “Though the court has the jurisdiction to try this case, we want the case to be expedited and we urge the court to remand the accused person in custody.”
Principal magistrate Isatou Darboe granted the prosecution’s application and transferred the matter to the High Court. She also ordered that the accused person be remanded at Mile 2, pending his appearance at the high court.
The trial magistrate further ordered a notice be sent to Legal Aid to provide a lawyer for the accused person.
