The Village Development Committee of Kafuta has been dissolved by a resolution of the councillors of the Brikama Area Council.
“I write to convey Council’s resolution to dissolve your Village Development Committee with immediate effect,” the Brikama Area Council said in a letter shared with The Standard.
The decision was made at a general council sitting last Tuesday following the findings of a Conflict Resolution Committee into the matter.
The Standard has learnt that the Council’s decision was communicated to all stakeholders and relevant parties since yesterday.
The development means Kafuta will soon have a new VDC made up of the people and for the development of Kafuta.
The dissolution came following complaints lodged by Concerned Citizens of Kafuta, who lodged a complaint against the VDC at the Brikama Area Council in July, accusing them of non-conformity to the laws of The Gambia, which the old dissolved VDC denied.
The group further lodged a police complaint against the VDC for alleged embezzlement of the village funds which they also denied. The criminal complaint is still at the police, according to sources in the village.
A new VDC will now be constituted by the Brikama Area Council in consultation with the relevant authorities.
