President Barrow congratulates Catholics on new bishop

As Gambian Catholics celebrate the inauguration of the first Gambian bishop on Saturday, President Adama Barrow has congratulated the Catholic community on the ordination of Bishop Gabriel Mendy.

In a statement, President Barrow prayed that the ordination of Bishop Mendy will further strengthen the relations amongst Gambians of all denominations and religions.

He urged the bishop to continue to promote peaceful co-existence amongst Gambian and wishes him success in his new task.

“The ordination of Bishop Mendy is a solemn occasion for all Gambians, the first time a citizen amongst the Catholic community is elevated to that position,” the statement from the presidency read.

The president was represented at the ceremony by a delegation of cabinet ministers and his adviser on Religious Affairs, Dembo Bojang. Thousands of Gambians from all backgrounds turned out at the Independence Stadium to witness the inauguration.
