The annual event brings together people from all walks of life for religious discourse and prayer.

Sheikh Alhaji Omar Ceesay, the caliph of the village, said recitation of the Holy Quran and discussion on the life and times of Prophet Muhammed would form the highlights of this year’s gamo.

“Last year, we discussed farming and health from an Islamic point of view as well as the importance of respecting and working for one’s parents,” he told The Standard.

He added: “I wish to extend special invitation to the President of the Republic His excellence Sheikh Professor Alhaji Yahya AJJ Jammeh, his government and entire Muslim Ummah.”

Sheikh Omar Ceesay is the representative of the Supreme Islamic Council in Salikenni. He studied in Mauritania, before winning a scholarship to further his university education in Riyad, Saudi Arabia. He returned in 1978, and had taught as a Quranic teacher in secondary and primary schools for 35 years.
