Despite fears of Covid-19, tens of thousands of revellers turned up to attend the new album launch of top Gambian musician ST at the Independence Stadium Saturday night.
A spokesman for the singer’s management said at least 50,000 tickets were sold for Dinding Mansa album launch.
The show started at around 10pm with disc jockeys and later invited artistes warming the stage.
The Afro-Manding rapper made his grand entrance dressed in the full regalia of a Mandinka king complete with a sceptre and staff. “It was outstanding. The entrance, anticipation and the reaction of the fans was real. There was a strong connection between him and his fans,” the spokesman said.
The Brikama-born artiste played numbers from his new album including title track Dinding Mansa, Ciggareto, Kano and People, a duet with the legendary Senegalese traditionalist pop singer Baba Maal. The show ended at around 5:30am.
However, some of the gig goers said they felt miffed at the no-show of Baaba Maal.
But ST’s spokesman explained: “Unfortunately Baba Maal couldn’t make it because of travel difficulties, but ST made up for it with his highly impressive performance.”
