By Omar Bah The United Nations representative for West Africa and the Sahel Mohammed Ibn Chambas on behalf of the UN Secretary General, congratulated Gambia’s ex-president for what he called a ‘special man like action’ after he handed over power in an effort to avoid any bloodshed in the country. “We are very pleased to be part of this mediation and we want to express our sincere appreciation to ex-President Yahya Jammeh, Alpha Condeh of Guinea Conakry and President Ould Abdul Aziz of Mauritania for their laudable efforts in persuading their brother to resolve the political impasse to prevent any bloodshed,” he told journalists on Friday. He continued: “The former Gambian leader has demonstrated a sense of patriotism and love for his country as he has said anyone who would want suffering to come to his country cannot be considered a patriot or a nationalist”. He noted that Yahya Jammeh as President and commander-in-chief of the Gambia for 22 years has made his contribution to build the Gambia, adding that “It will not be to him to watch what he has helped to build got destroyed”. “The UN Secretary General together with the Chair of ECOWAS and the chair of the African Union would be issuing a statement to commend this special man like action on the part of President Jammeh which is going to prevent the Gambia from joining so many countries in Africa which are known for violence. We appreciate that Gambia is going to remain peaceful and stable for prosperity,” he concluded.]]>
