A local fishing boat capsized in rough waters off the Atlantic coast near Sanyang killing at least two men.
The fishing canoe was caught up in the heavy winds accompanying a rainstorm last Tuesday evening.
It is not confirmed how many people were on the boat when the incident occurred. Some unconfirmed local sources claimed there were at least five people on the boat.
The spokesperson of the Gambia Fire and Rescue Services, Assistant Divisional Officer Pateh Gibba, confirmed to The Standard that two bodies were recovered while a luckier third fisherman was rescued by fellow fishermen and taken to the Sanyang clinic for treatment.
The Standard has confirmed that the two deceased fishermen were youths with one of them being a native of Bakau New Town. His remains were interred later last week.
