Azerbaijan Premier League side Sabail FC have signed Gambian defender Maudo Lamine Jarjué on a two-year contract from Portuguese second-tier club Gil Vicente.
The 19-year-old was born in the largest urban Gambian centre of Serrekunda but is currently with Bissau-Guinean citizenship.
He was signed by Gil Vicente last year after being spotted playing for a local team in Bissau whom he impressed for.
“I was playing in Guinea-Bissau before scouts of Gil Vicente saw me and took me to Portugal after securing my Bissau passport as my grandmother comes from there,” the hard tackling defender told The Standard.
“I believe this move to Azerbaijan is good for me because it gives me the chance to play more and develop into a mature player, so I am looking forward to starting this new chapter.”
Modou Lamin Jarju, his real name, though spelt Maudo Lamine Jarjué in Portuguese, featured four times last season for Vicente, clocking 245 minutes.
He has linked up with his new club for pre-season in Turkey ahead of the start of the 2017/18 Azerbaijan league next month.
Sabail FC, founded just less than a year ago, play their matches at the 5000-capacity Bayil Stadium in Baku.
