Convict re-arraigned for escaping custody

By Binta A Bah

One Abdoulie Gissay has been brought to court to face charge after he escaped from police custody the day he was sentenced for stealing.

Gissay is accused of escaping from from the Wellingara police station on March 15 but he denied the charge and accordingly pleaded not guilty.

His application for bail was however opposed by the prosecuting police officer Corporal Badjie who urged the magistrate to refuse Gissay’s bail. He reminded the court that the accused was supposed to be taken to the Mile 2 Central Prisons after he was sentenced by the Bundung court for a previous case but managed to escape from the police.

Mr Gissay however pleaded with the court to grant him bail, saying he did not escape from custody.

The magistrate granted the prosecutor’s request and remanded Gissay at Mile 2 prisons. Hearing into the matter is expected to commence on September 28.
