Police in Basse have arrested one Filly Trawally, 20, who is alleged to have dumped her newly-born baby in the bush recently.
Since the baby was discovered, police mounted an expeditious search for the mother leading to her arrest.
Trawally, a native of Kerewan Badala in the Wuli West District, is currently in custody at the Basse Police Station helping in the investigations.
The police have also retrieved the baby from the SOS orphanage and reunited it with the suspected mother after the arrest.
Sources told The Standard she confessed to dumping her baby, saying she was overwhelmed with shame since she has not been in any marriage after her divorce.
Kebba Jatta, the regional social welfare officer for URR, described the incident as unfortunate. He said they are currently working with the police in ensuring that the mother is granted bail in the best interest of the child.
“I can tell you that at the moment the child is healthy and sound,” he noted.
