Both of The Gambia’s male and female volleyball teams came out with flying colours from the Zone II sub-zonal Pool 2 olympic qualifiers which ended in Senegal Sunday.

After some splendid performances, both teams secured places in the Zonal finals proper. Any success at that level will further push The Gambia to move closer to getting a ticket to the Rio Olympic Games.

The qualifiers began in Dakar Friday and The Gambia beat Senegal in the female round robin tourney securing 12 points from 4 games leaving the host with no points.

Since Mauritania and Cape Verde did not present female teams, The Gambia automatically became the new leaders in Zone II Pool 2 female standings.

This is the first time The Gambia won back-to-back victories against Senegal in such a competition. In the male category, The Gambia started poorly securing only 9 points in a round robin. The boys bounced back though the following day to beat Cape Verde Islands 3-1 in four games to gather a total of 12 points from eight games, behind Senegal.

The host beat Cape Verde Islands to top the standings with 15 points and gained qualification while Cape Verde got 6 points.
