The Gambia over the weekend hosted a successful international beach volleyball championship organized for the ZONE II member countries by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa ANOCA. Seven countries; The Gambia, Senegal, Cape Verde Island, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Mali and Sierra Leone took part in a grueling tourney that thrilled crowds on the Palma Rima beach.

The finals provided fascinating duels between The Gambia and Sierra Leone in the male section and a no less exciting encounter in the female section again involving host The Gambia, and Senegal. The Gambian boys made history for themselves by seeing off the boys from Freetown, beating Sierra Leone to lift the gold medal. In the lead up to this final, Team Gambia beat Senegal, Bissau and Conakry in the first round and went on to beat Mali in the semi finals.
