ASP David Kujabi said the driver and apprentice of the commercial vehicle are currently in police detention and are likely to face a charge of negligence.
He told The Standard: “The lady was travelling in a van when she suddenly felt nauseous. She asked the apprentice to open the side door while the vehicle was moving. She fell off and died on the spot. She is a native of Mbulom in the Casamance region of Senegal. Her body is currently at the morgue in Banjul and we are trying to contact the Senegalese embassy so that the body will be identified and taken back to Senegal
“The driver and his apprentice are currently helping the police in Mansa Konko in the investigations. Depending on the outcome, charges may be preferred against them, but we cannot say that at the moment. I do not have their names right now but the likely charge may be negligence.”
Spokesperson Kujabi went on: “I want to appeal to the public to know that anytime someone wants to answer to the call of nature or any situation of that sort, he or she should ask the driver to stop the car. I know apprentices are fond of opening the side door while the car is moving, but they have to be careful because they could be held responsible in situations like this.”
