One Isatou Njie, a breastfeeding mother of a six-month-old baby, was yesterday given a suspended sentence by principal magistrate Omar Cham of Brikama Magistrates’ Court after she pleaded guilty for assaulting one Mustapha Drammeh, her step-son by pouring hot water on him.
Magistrate Cham said he would have imposed a custodial sentence on her if she were not breastfeeding.
Isatou Njie was fined one thousand dalasi in default to serve one-year imprisonment and ordered to pay the sum of five thousand dalasi as compensation to the victim in default to serve another one-year imprisonment.
Magistrate Cham ordered that the sentences are effective after two years when the child would stop breastfeeding but failure to pay the fine and compensation could see the accused serve two (2) years imprisonment.
According to cadet Inspector Kemo Y. Manneh, the incident happened on 30 August, 2019 at Brikama Wellingara when Isatou and Mustapha Drammeh had a brawl during which she took an electric kettle filled with hot water and poured it on him.
Cadet Inspector Manneh disclosed that the victim was taken to Brikama Health Centre where he was treated and discharged.
