Presidential aspirant and leader of the Gambia Alliance for National Unity, Sheikh Tijan Hydara has called for a massive turn out of Gambians to register in the current general voter registration exercise.

Speaking to The Standard as he arrived to register in Brufut-Nyafullen, Hydara said the voter’s card is the most effective tool of any citizen to participate in the future direction of his or her country.

He said all eligible Gambians have an obligation to register so that on December 4, they would be able to determine who takes control of their taxes, provides inspirational leadership, guarantees economic and personal freedoms as well as raises the country’s dignity and sovereignty. “GANU has set itself the task of freeing this country from a weak, uninspired and incompetent leadership. We want to free our people from poverty and the current sky rocketing of the cost of living. But it must be noted that the only way Gambians can choose a leader for change is to acquire a voter’s card,” he said.

Commenting on the r process so far, Hydara said he is impressed with the robust observation of the process by all political actors and called on the local authorities entrusted with attestation of voters to do so without bias.  “I call on all alkalolu and seyfolu to ensure that no ineligible claimant is registered because falsifying and granting  citizenship to foreigners could have a negative influence on the elections as well as other social amenities. Alkalolu must resist any attempt to be used by politicians to give attestation to foreigners and foreigners equally must stay away from Gambian politics,” Hydara said.
