GSSA bans schools from athletics championship for alleged cheating

Ismaila Ceesay, the president of the Gambia Secondary School Sports Association (GSSSA) has revealed at a press conference that the champions of the recently concluded national athletics heats in Regions 1 and 2, Bottrop and Scan-Aid are among others banned from participating in the forthcoming national athletics championship for allegedly using ‘unqualified’ athletes during the heats.

The full list of the expelled schools reads: “Bottrop, Mahaad, Jamisa, Mingdaw, Kafuta, Jambangjelly, Jambur, St Peter’s, New Covenant, Nusrat Scan-Aid, Kotu and Nemasu.”

However according to the GSSA Facebook page the list could also include Bakoteh, Bansang, St Michael and Farafenni Senior Secondary Schools all of which are under investigation for allegedly using unqualified athletes in the heats.

This year’s national championship finals is scheduled from the 11-13 March at the Independence Stadium. There have not been any public comments from the affected schools so far and it is not immediately known whether there is any window of appeal available to them.
