The Kanifing Municipal Council last Saturday embarked on a massive cleansing exercise within the municipality.
The exercise was conducted in collaboration with all sectors within the municipality.
The objective of the set-setal was to clean the entire municipality and offices.
The Chairman of the KMC Bakary K Jammeh said in an exclusive interview with The Standard that KMC is the local government authority responsible for service delivery to the municipality. He said in order for it to work effectively there needs to be a conducive setting.
“I observe that even the KMC offices are not really conducive. That is why I felt that to be able to move the municipality forward, we must start with ourselves. Like it is said, charity begins at home. I have discussed this with my colleagues, management committee, the senior management team, with all other staff to clean the environment,” he said.
“One purpose of local government is to also support local democracy. The people should also be demanding for KMC to provide what they are set up for; what they are paying their taxes for not only cleaning services.
“We are making a statement today that we ourselves hold ourselves to a certain standard and we will try to apply this standard. If you look at the streets, it’s not only dirty but it is also congested with vehicles parking everywhere. This not what the New Gambia is about,” he added.
