The Kanifing Municipal Council has on Monday inaugurated Latrikunda Yiringanya market worth 1.5 million dalasi after months of refurbishment.
The refurbishment was sanctioned when the Council noticed the market was in a bad state, with many people saying it could collapse.
Sainabou Martin Sonko, CEO of the Council, revealed some of the markets that the council is refurbishing as a result of the pledge made to the people of Kanifing by Mayor Talib Bensouda.
“Sometime back, we did the opening for Latrikunda Sabiji market and today it is Yiringanya’s turn and next two months, we hope to do more. Currently, we are rehabilitating that of Bakau which will soon be completed. So, these markets are Bakau, Latri Kunda and Tallinding, which is currently being constructed,” she said.
She also urged the general community to be responsible and try to keep the market clean and avoid littering which she reported to have observed during a visit to the market at time of refurbishment.
“We found a lot of trash in front of the market which is not welcoming; so this is something that I want to put across the community to take note. Iasmuch as we will like to bring development and keep the environment clean, we cannot do it alone; we have to come onboard to ensure that the environment is well kept and the trash is put in a very organized manner like having them in bags and bins so that when the trash trucks come to collect these trashes, it would be easy for them.”
Musa Bah, the deputy mayor of KM and councilor of Latrikunda Yiringanya ward, expressed his indebtedness to his committee for their efforts in refurbishing the market.
”Part of what I provided in the market is solar panels installation to brighten the area at night. This is because my mandate as people’s representative is to make sure that I promote, present, defend and implement the interest of my constituents,” he said.
Chebou Jeng, youth representative of Latrikunda Yiringanya, acknowledged the council for its benevolence especially the deputy mayor for coming up with such initiative and not excluding the youths in the development agenda of their community.
