The lands ministry is expected to “in a few weeks” deliver a final verdict in the Latrikunda Yiringanya alkalorship crisis between Pa Omar Faal and Swaebou Faal, both of whom claim legitimate heir to the throne.
The crisis started following the demise of alkalo Alhaji Amadou Faal in late March.
The dispute was referred to the KMC for mediation but the municipality has asked the residents of Latrikunda to decide who they want to lead them through signature of endorsement.
“Each of them made a statement and were later asked to go into a room to negotiate between themselves but they couldn’t agree on anything,” Dembo Sanyang, director of compliance at the KMC, told The Standard.
“We then gave them two forms and asked that their candidature be endorsed by yard owners of the community. But Pa Omar Faal declined, saying that is a form of election and he wouldn’t take the form anywhere. Swaebou went with his form and an ultimatum of one week was given to them which elapsed on November 3rd,” Sanyang said.
Mr Sanyang said Swaebou came up with his endorsement form, signed by 455 yard owners.
“Upon that, the Mayor recommended him for alkalorship to the minister of Lands and Local Government. The lands ministry is now expected to come up with a verdict on the recommendation of the KMC which was forwarded to the lands minister for approval,” Mr Sanyang explained.
“We have now done our part and it is now up to the minister to come up with a decision,” he added.
