NEA discusses with NA committee on environment

The National Environment Agency on Thursday held a day sensitization briefing session for National Assembly Select Committee on Environment.
The day exercise was meant to brief the law makers on pertinent environment issues and to further understand the institutional mandates of the NEA.
It also gave the agency the opportunity to spell out its operational programme and current environmental legislations.

Speaking at the opening, Momodou Jama Suwareh, executive director of NEA, told the select committee that environmental issues are at the forefront of global agenda due to numerous challenges emanating from the environment.
Suwareh said the challenges are diverse and varied from region to region but the common denomination is that their impact is felt globally and no system is immune.

“The Gambia at a critical juncture and there is no secret that our common aspiration is to fight poverty by ensuring prosperity,” he said.
He however said the country is blessed with the requisite human resources and sound polices and legislative for sustainable development.

Mohammed Denton, director of finance NEA, reiterated his office’s commitment to support any cause meant to protect the environment.
He said the problem of environment is a cross cutting issue and needs the participation of everyone.
