Parliamentary election too will be free and fair—IEC

By Omar Bah The Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Alieu Momarr Njai, has assured political leaders and stakeholders that the upcoming parliamentary election too will be free, fair and transparent. He then announced the date for the election as April 6. Speaking to journalists in a press-briefing yesterday, the IEC chairman said the commission will put out all measures in place to ensure the tabulation error that occurred during the presidential election is never repeated in future elections. Commenting further, the IEC chairman said the Nomination of candidates will take place from Thursday 9th to Sunday 12th March 2017 between 8am and 4pm at the IEC Regional Offices in Banjul, Kanifing, Brikama, Mansakonko, Kerewan, Janjanbureh and Basse. Campaign starts on 15th March and ends on 4th April 2017. On the qualification of candidates A candidate shall be a citizen of the Gambia, attained the age of twenty one years, speak English language with a degree of proficiency, ordinarily resident in the constituency for a period of at least one year prior to nomination day, should nominated by not less than three hundred voters in his constituency, sworn decoration of assets, tax clearance certificate, payment of deposit of D50,000 as amended, colour and photographs of a candidate.]]>
