One of the purposes for the setting up of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) is to effect reconciliation amongst and between Gambian citizens. Thus, if at any time the Commission is able to reconcile two or more people; that is a great achievement indeed.
Since the inception of its work, the TRRC has had a Reconciliations Committee which is working hard to ensure that people who have had differences and grievances against each other are reconciled.
It is in this light that the effort to reconcile former vice chairperson, Mr Sanna Sabally, and former defense minister, Mr Edward Singhatay of the AFPRC, is a step in the right direction. These two people held the second highest office in the country.
As a council, they were all one in the beginning but as we have seen and heard at the TRRC, due to power tussles and other grievances, these two men fell out.
Now, the fact that they have publicly reconciled in front of the nation at the TRRC, the effect of that EMBRACE should filter down to their families, relatives and loved ones and indeed the entire nation.
After the revelations of the truth, and hopefully, some form of justice and reparations are put in place, it is fervently anticipated that true and general reconciliation would be effected and the country can ultimately have peace and stability.
There is no doubt that at the moment, the country is polarized and that there are many citizens who are very angry and holding some grudges in their hearts. Thus, the issue of reconciliation is a very necessary and important one which should be given the attention it deserves.
This is the only way we can attain peace and stability!
