The management of the Independence Stadium has announced that the facility is closed from yesterday 9th February to allow renovation works on the playing ground, which is in a poor state.
However according to a statement from the management, those already with contracts and have met the conditions will be allowed to use the facility during the period of renovation.
The announcement came six weeks ahead of the Afcon 2023 preliminaries against Chad which many people feared may not be hosted in Banjul because of the poor state of the stadium’s pitch and pavilions.
Ebou Faye, general manager of the Independence Stadium said renovation works on the pitch is expected to gather pace but the pavilions could still be a challenge. ”But since the Caf ban there have been an international match there such as the champions league match involving Fortune FC. So we shall see what happens before then,” he said.
