A large number of Gambia College students had alleged they could not get refunds of fees they have paid even though they have now got scholarships that already covered those fees.
One female student revealed that she paid D10,000 in 2020 before being awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of Higher Education but when she demanded a refund, she was told that the school is only refunding the 2019 batch before they can settle the class of 2020.
“But to our surprise, none of us, either the 2019 or 2020 class have been refunded,” she alleged.
Another student, Buba Gagigo said he personally made lots of follow-ups but he is yet to receive his refund.
The Standard contacted the college authorities with one Lamin Jammeh, an accountant, explaining that there is a procedure for refund, which included filling a form with clearance and all the students whose filled forms have been received are already refunded.
He explained that those who are not refunded yet must first verify whether their scholarship sponsors have already paid their fees to the college. ”Once they confirm that, then they must now fill the relevant form for their refunds,” he explained.
The Principal of the College, Abubcarr Jallow clarified that all those whose sponsors paid their scholarships have been refunded before their scholarships arrived. “Most if not all those sponsored by Moherst have been refunded and even those sponsored by MRC Holland Foundation have had their refunds, even though their sponsorships have not been entirely paid to the college yet,” Principal Jallow explained.
